Your experience

Description

The Alte Nationalgalerie is the place to see a dazzling collection of neoclassical, romantic, Biedermeier, modernist and impressionist art in Berlin. In addition to unmistakable works by German artists, you will find paintings by Manet, Monet, Cézanne and others.

The first thing you will notice when you arrive at the Alte Nationalgalerie is how impressive the building is, even compared to the other wonders of this magnificent cultural island. When you come in, you will be delighted by the simple yet stylish interior, which puts the works of art in the foreground without getting in the way.

Although the collection is very extensive with 1,800 paintings and 1,500 sculptures, this is an easy museum to explore. Highlights are Lovis Corinth's The Blind Samson, Adolph von Menzel's The Iron Rolling Mill and Max Liebermann's impressionist paintings, which prove that this 19th century movement was not exclusive to Paris.

If you prefer your art in 3D, visit the sculpture hall on the first floor. Masterpieces such as Louis Sussmann-Hellborn's Sleeping Beauty will make you wonder how on earth someone can apply so many details to a block of marble.

In a city famous for its monuments and museums from the Second World War, the Old National Gallery is a welcome (and sometimes necessary) stop for good old art.
