Your experience

Description

"The whole world is a stage, and all the men and women are just players." That's what Shakespeare said in As You Like It. Take a fun tour, see what Shakespeare's stage was like at The Globe in 1599, and learn how one man changed the face of English literature.

The authentic Tudor exterior and thatched roof (the only one in London) is the prelude to what awaits you inside The Globe: an exquisite and architecturally accurate replica of Shakespeare's original theatre.

On this tour you will see in your "mind's eye" how the plays of The Bard would have been performed and received. You'll get a visceral experience of a time when it was supposedly okay to throw oyster shells at characters you didn't like!

Sit down on the multi-tiered wooden seating that housed the better-off members of society and see how the audience surrounded the stage in a tight circle.

The exhibition is best enjoyed with an audio guide filled with an hour of carefully compiled extras and Elizabethan theatre facts. Together with these colourful stories from the 1599 Globe you will get an impression of the harsh atmosphere and how comedies, tragedies and stories came alive for people from all walks of life

And if you need a beer or two to quench your thirst, there is The Swan Bar & Restaurant. A more elegant affair than would have been possible for Shakespeare's clients. It offers a breathtaking view of the Thames and St. Paul's and an impressive food and drink menu.
