Your experience

Decisions and coincidences, traumas and taboos, all here at Camp Vught National Memorial. Explore the museum, monuments, watchtowers and barracks of a former SS concentration camp from 1943-1944 in the Netherlands.

Camp Vught has a dark and disturbing history to explore. The concentration camp was built between 1943 and 1944 and housed 32,000 prisoners. It was the only concentration camp run directly by the SS in Western Europe outside Nazi Germany.

Today it is both a museum and a memorial.

You can explore the terrain at your own pace. There are various buildings and outdoor areas that show you the reality the prisoners have encountered here: The watchtowers were reconstructed, a barrack was rebuilt to half its original size and a model made of natural stone shows the overall structure of the camp.

There are special areas where you can pause and remember the dead - a commentary wall, a memorial wall and a children's memorial. Other parts of the museum also lend themselves quite naturally to moments of introspection and compassion.

The visit will be solemn, but will contribute much to your knowledge of the dark events of the Second World War.
