Your experience

The dominant spiral staircase of Scala Contarini del Bovolo is the stuff of storybooks (and mathematical theories, no doubt!). It is a genuine Venetian jewel and a classic combination of Gothic and Renaissance architecture, known for its prominent use by Orson Welles in his version of Othello.

The Palazzo Contarini del Bovolo is a tiny, pretty palazzo, often blessed with hot Venetian sunshine. Despite its small size, it is known throughout Italy for its external, multi-curved spiral staircase: the Scala Contarini del Bovolo, which is Venetian for the snail shell.

You'll soon see why. Standing at the top, looking down, the complicated design of the spiral staircase looks like a snail shell - a very chic snail shell. Each step is wide and spacious, and the overall effect is definitely majestic.

The palazzo was built in the 15th century by architect Giovanni Candi, but the spiral staircase was added later in 1499. This gastropod-like beauty is an elegant testimony to Venice's unique history and architecture. It is also the highest spiral staircase in Venice!

Opt for the combined ticket and visit the Oratorio dei Crociferi, which is only a few steps away. This small Roman Catholic prayer hall is filled with an impressive cycle of paintings by Palma il Giovane. Experiencing the bright red and gold robes worn by the dignitaries and celebrities in these paintings is a must for art lovers.
