Your experience

Description

Take some time to discover the true history of Jewish life in the second largest synagogue in the world and celebrate Jewish culture and history. See, hear and remember the First and Second World Wars through thought-provoking exhibits and experience the burial ground of 2,600 Jews who died in the Holocaust.

It may be a darker step into the past than one of Budapest's street art tours, but a visit to the Great Synagogue on Dohány Street is a must for anyone who wants to know and feel how far this diverse city has come.

Built in 1859 with room for 3,000 people, this refuge for Hungary's Jewish community for worship, praise and celebration also carries solemn historical undertones - the inner courtyard serves as a burial ground for almost 2,600 Jews who were killed by the Nazis.

Journey back through Jewish history at the Jewish Museum of the synagogue with an audio guide. See reports and artefacts from the years of the Holocaust. Listen to what happened within these walls and read the names of the dead - they are all engraved on the reflecting leaves of the Holocaust memorial "Tree of Life".

This moving journey into the First and Second World Wars, heroes, horrors and other happy stories (we promise) could be the best thing you've done in Budapest.
