Your experience

Description

Once an important pilgrimage route between Italy and Spain, the Pont d'Avignon is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, attracting more than 300,000 visitors every year - not bad for a bridge that doesn't go far! Don't miss the opportunity to experience this legendary piece of French history, which offers an unbeatable view of the Rhône and the Palais des Papes.

The Pont d'Avignon was completed in 1185 and was originally an impressive 920 metres long with 22 graceful arches. Unfortunately, the abilities of the medieval laymen were no match for the armies of Louis VIII and the regular flooding of the Rhône, and the bridge collapsed several times.

Now you can visit the remains of this important border crossing, which still extends about 200 meters to the water. Your journey begins at the exhibition station, where you will learn all about the creation of this historic bridge and its role over time.

Above the third arch is a small chapel dedicated to Saint Bénézet. Legend has it that young Bénézet heard the voice of Jesus Christ and asked him to build a bridge over the Rhône. He supervised the construction, and the chapel originally contained his tomb - in recognition of his faith and commitment.
