Description

There are palaces, and then there are palaces. This mammoth monument is the biggest gothic building of the world and is enthroned over the picturesque city Avignon. The palace was built in 1316 by Pope John XXII (we suspect that he had help) and over the years has housed nine popes and countless monarchs and nobles. Explore and discover this palatial piece of world history.

The "Palace of the Popes" is officially the largest building ever built in the Gothic style. If you consider that this was the era of castles and palaces, it is indeed very great - proof of the sheer power and influence of the Catholic Church.

This majesty is still palpable today, and you can prepare to have your jaw dropped as you explore the 25 stunning rooms. The Grande Audience Hall and the Consistorium are real eye-catchers, while the Great Clementine Chapel has been the scene of all kinds of sacred acts for centuries. You will also get an insight into the various private apartments where the popes lived, furnished in the scientific style that would have been groundbreaking at the time!

Of course it would not be a palace without lavish decorations, and the walls and ceilings are decorated with frescoes by Matteo Giovanetti and Simone Martini. It is an exciting lesson in history and a living work of art, and it is also really, really big - what are you waiting for?
