Description

The still active rock churches from the 12th century attract many visitors and are a real speciality. With the emergence of the eleven monolithic churches, the pilgrimage site of Lalibela, also known as New Jerusalem, was created.

The churches have been the religious and spiritual centre of the region for at least 900 years and have been excavated from a red volcanic mass of scoria under which dark grey basalt was found. All eleven churches are connected by a labyrinth of tunnels and passages with openings to hermit caves and catacombs, giving the rock-hewn churches the impression of an underground city

Your professional tour guide will meet you at the reception of your hotel for a full day excursion and tell you more about the history of the holy city and its origins

By lunchtime you will visit the first group of churches, including Bet Medhane Alem, Bet Maryam, Bet Meskel, Bet Danaghel, Bet Mikael and Bet Golgotha, which are connected by an underground tunnel

In the afternoon, after a short rest and lunch, you will visit the second group of churches, including the most famous church of St. George, as well as Bet Gabriel-Rufael, Bet Merkorios, Bet Amanual and Bet Abba Lebanos.

Explore the most important of all churches, the Bet Giyorgis (St. George), which was built in honour of the patron saint St. George and learn more about the life of the holy patron saint.

After you have seen everything, you have the opportunity to attend the famous Ethiopian coffee ceremony in a local house. The three traditional rounds of 'Buna' (Amharic word for coffee) will be served, so it will take a while. In the evening you are also recommended to visit a traditional tej-house, where you can taste Ethiopian mead while dancing a traditional North Ethiopian dance.
