The traditional spice trade in Hamburg has it’s origin in the old merchant houses of Deichstrasse (Dike street).
This street is not only the origin of spice trade but also was the breeding ground for breweries in Hamburg. Please follow Jacob along the traces of the so called „Pfeffersäcke“ (special expression for old merchants in Hamburg).
During this guided tour you will get to know all about spices and about how spices had been and are still being sold. You will walk over bridges along the Hamburg typical canals which are called „Fleete“ and Jacob will lead you into the famous warehouse district - a city witin the city - the so called Speicherstadt. In these old but restaured warehouse buildings that were build for groceries and other goods transported in sacs you still find expensive oriental carpets (it is possible to look into one of the ancient warehouses!).
Ingo Vierk representing Jacob Lange is a spices specialist with more than 35 years work experience and knows almost everything about the spices trade, harbour and the warehouse district. He will accompany you and your group.
You can also combine this tour with a trip on one of the harbour boats and see where transshipment of spices took place in former times and takes place nowadays. During night time torches can be used when strolling through the illuminated warehouse district.
Let’s follow the smell of pepper and co.
