Your experience

Description

This tour is designed for those who want to get an overview of the past and present of Hungarian Jewry and understand the differences between the existing main directions of Judaism. With the help of our German/English speaking tour guides you will be introduced to the most important chapters of Jewish history and culture in Hungary.

We visit the synagogue triangle, which offers a differentiated view of Judaism in Budapest. The tour includes an interior tour of the Dohány Street Synagogue and a guided tour of the Jewish Museum with a unique impressive collection of Jewish art from Hungary and other parts of Eastern Europe. After visiting the synagogue, we visit the cemetery of the martyrs, where thousands of Jews who were killed in the Second World War in the last days before the liberation of the ghetto were buried

Our tour continues into the Raoul Wallenberg Memorial Park with the Tree of Life, which was created in memory of those who went missing during the Holocaust. Afterwards, the tour continues to the Temple of Heroes, which was built in memory of the Jewish soldiers who gave their lives for Austria-Hungary during the First World War. After the tour there is the possibility to visit the Jewish Centre with its exhibitions on Jewish history.

To understand the history and present of Jewish culture, we continue our tour of the Jewish Quarter, which was the ghetto during World War II. Today there are synagogues, monuments, kosher restaurants and shops. A few minutes from the main synagogue is the second memorial park dedicated to Carl Lutz, the "Hungarian Schindler". Afterwards we will walk along Rumbach Street, where we will make a stop at the Rumbach Synagogue and another important place for Hungarian Jews, Madách Square

After a short walk through the Gozsdu Passage we reach the centre of the Orthodox community in Budapest. There we visit the Kazinczy Street Synagogue. After our tour we invite you to the smooth kosher pastry shop Fröhlich. As another option you can get 10% discount in the smooth kosher restaurant Carmel.
