Your experience

Edinburgh probably is the most beautiful city in the world in a very unique and beautiful landscape. Grown in this environment, the city nowadays contains of two world heritage sites, the old town because of its history and the new town because of the literature and architecture.

In 2005, Edinburgh became the first UNESCO city of literature.

Among the authors who are connected to Edinburgh are the two novelists Sir Walter Scott and Robert Louis Stevenson. Both were born in this city and grew up here as well. Stories of Scott are, for example, "Waverley","Ivanhoe" or "The Heart of Mid-Lothian",and Stevenson wrote, for example, "Treasure Island", "Kidnapped" and "Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde".

The national poet of Scotland, Robert Burns, was born in South-West-Scotland, but he lived in Edinburgh and many of his poems were published here. A song of Burns, Auld Lang Syne, is world-famous and is sung on New Year's Eve all around the world. The "Writer's Museum" in the old town was dedicated to these three writers.

Another son of literature of Ediburgh is Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, who was also born here. He studied near the medical school at the university and is, of course, the originator of Sherlock Holmes.

Nowadays, J.K. Rowling, originator of Harry Potter, lives in the city and one can visit the birth place of Harry Potter and the café in which she wrote the first parts of the story.

Ian Rankin also lived in Edinburgh - he is no local, but his stories about Inspector Rebus take place in the city.

During this tour you will see a lot of places connected to these and other writers, poets and their stories.
