Your experience

A large part of this stretch of coast has been declared a protected natural area, such as Cabo de Creus, Aiguamolls de l'Empordà and the Islas Medes Marine Reserve. But the Costa Brava is not only famous for its landscape, but also for its places. The former fishing villages with whitewashed houses and narrow alleys have retained their charm to this day.

Over the centuries, many cultures and civilisations have settled here, whose traces are still preserved today, as you will see from the excavations of Greek and Roman remains in Empúries.

We would like to show you the most historical and beautiful places on the Costa Brava in one day, so that you can get an idea of the importance of this region. Everybody who visits Catalonia should have seen this and the excursion will surely not leave anybody untouched.

We start every Monday and Thursday at 8.30 am at the Plaza Catalunya in Barcelona. We recommend that you get there about 15 minutes earlier.

Via the motorway we reach Calella de Palafrugell at around 10.15 a.m., a small fishing village that has preserved its original architectural charm to this day.

The small bays form an incomparable frame for the beautiful landscape.

There you will have enough time to visit the place and take pictures. Around 11.00 o'clock we walk on the Camino de Ronda to the neighbouring village Llafranc. The walk takes about 30 minutes, the path is level and easy to walk even for untrained hikers.

These Caminos de Ronda, circular routes, run along the entire Costa Brava. In the past they were used to control smuggling along the coast. Along these paths you can explore beautiful corners that can only be reached on foot.

Llafranc is another small and picturesque fishing village, typical for the villages along the coast

Around 12.00 o'clock we reach Pals, a town in the interior of the country, which is situated on a hill. Almost all the buildings in this village still date from the Middle Ages. The round city tower from the 12th century can be seen from afar. From the top you have an incomparable view of the Costa Brava and the entire surroundings

A stroll through the cobblestone streets of the town centre is like a little journey into the past. Gates with round arches, stone facades with oval window openings, stone balconies - perfectly preserved. Our next stop is l'Estartit, a coastal town with a large marina and an internationally important diving centre because of the nearby Medes Islands

The Islas Medes have a great variety of underwater flora and fauna, with a total of over 1,200 different species living there. This ecosystem has been classified as the largest marine reserve of the western Mediterranean. It has been declared a national nature park and a specially protected Mediterranean region (ZEPIM, Zona especialmente protegida de importancia para el Mediterráneo).

You will have enough time for lunch and a little stroll through the town before we embark at 15.00 on the Nautilus, a boat with underwater panoramic windows.

The journey takes 1 hour 30 minutes. First of all we drive around the islands. These are beautiful in themselves; through the panoramic windows of the ship under water you also have a unique view of the colourful underwater world as if you were diving yourself

The journey then continues along the spectacular cliffs of the Sierra de Montgrí, which are only accessible from the sea and are among the most unspoilt landscapes of the Costa Brava.

Our last stop is at the huge excavation site of the Greek-Roman ruins of Empúries, which we reach at about 17.00 hrs. There, the only archaeological site in Spain where the remains of a Greek city are located right next to those of the later Roman city. Empúries is also located in a privileged environment directly by the sea.

In the Greek city you can still see the remains of the city wall, the acropolis, the market place and numerous buildings. Outside the archaeological site you can see the Greek port from the 1st century B.C., from which the Olympic torch was embarked in 1992 during the Olympic Games in Barcelona.

In the Roman city, the most striking features are the excellently preserved mosaic floors, the remains of an amphitheatre, several statues and remains of the road network.

At 18.00 o'clock the sightseeing is finished and we go back to Barcelona, where we arrive again at the Plaza Catalunya around 20.00 o'clock.
